Samsung releases new, speedier 860 Pro and Evo SSDs

Both drives come in a variety of storage sizes. The read and write speeds are respectively up to 550 MB/s and 520 MB/s. The Samsung 860 PRO and 860 EVO and the latest in the memory maker's SATA interface solid-state drives, and the successors to the 850 PRO and 850 EVO that proved to be so popular among enthusiasts back in 2015.

Building on the successful launch of the "850 PRO and 850 EVO" - the industry's first consumer SSDs with Vertical-NAND technology - the 860 PRO and 860 EVO achieve industry-leading performance for Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) SSDs, offering enhancements in speed, reliability, compatibility and capacity, according to a company statement here. The 860 Pro, on the other hand, is available in 256GB, 51GB, 1TB, 2GB, and 4GB capacities, with the 4TB storage option holding up to 114 hours and 30 minutes of 4K Ultra HD video.

The Pro model offers read/write speeds of 560/530 MB/s while the Evo model supports up to 550/520 MB/s read/write speeds.

Both the Samsung 860 Evo and 860 Pro come with an upgraded five-year limited warranty. As you would expect, the more affordable 860 EVO SSDs aren't as impressive as the 860 PRO drives when it comes to endurance. Alongside the 2.5-inch form factor, it houses the mSATA and M.2 form factors, supporting ultra-slim computing applications. The Samsung SSD 860 Pro 512GB (MZ-76P512BW) is on sale for $249.99.

The 860 Pro and 860 Evo start at $140 (256GB) and $95 (250GB) respectively and go all the way up to 4TB models that cost a whopping $1,900 and $1,400 respectively. Emphasising the advancements made in the EVO series, Samsung says that the 860 EVO has up to six times longer sustained performance than its predecessor due to enhanced Intelligent TurboWrite technology.
