Second measles case reported in Chicago area

While both people infected with the virus traveled through Chicago O'Hare International Airport on the same day, authorities say the cases are unrelated.

"It is important to note that these two individuals did not become infected while at O'Hare airport, but had already contracted measles", the health department wrote in the statement.

A second person with measles may have exposed others at O'Hare International Airport earlier this month, the Illinois Department of Public Health said Wednesday. The Chicago Tribune reports that the passenger's flight landed at Terminal 5, which is the global terminal, Wednesday morning, and departed on a domestic flight out of Terminal 1.

Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, in an emailed statement from a spokeswoman at its children's hospital, said protocols for notifying patients and caregivers of possible exposure have been initiated.

The newly reported case was infectious when they visited terminal 5 at O'Hare airport on January 9 between 8:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. The person with measles also visited an office plaza and three suburban hospitals between January 10 and 13. That person then departed on a domestic flight out of Terminal 1 and the public was made aware of that incident on January 15. People who have not received a measles vaccination are asked to get themselves checked.

Most individuals have been vaccinated for measles as children and are not at high risk.

"Those who were considered most at risk are being contacted directly by health officials", a spokesperson for the agency told ABC News. The measles virus can linger in the air and on surfaces hours after an infected individual leaves the area. Symptoms include a rash that starts on the face and neck, a high fever, runny nose, cough and red, watery eyes. If these develop, the department advises calling a health care provider before going to a medical office or emergency department, which ensures special arrangements can be made for evaluation while protecting other patients and medical staff from possible infection.

IDPH is stressing that there is not any sort of measles outbreak at the airport.

The CDC states that most measles cases in the U.S. result from worldwide travel, and warned travelers to make sure they are protected against the disease before they go overseas.
