Shutdown throws White House State of the Union plans into turmoil

As the clock ticked past midnight and the government officially closed down, feverish political calculations were taking place all around the US Senate floor, where the dramatic climax of the shutdown drama played out.

Mr Trump has given The Economist plenty of cause to feature him on our cover, where we have tackled a wide range of topics-from his equivocations about the far-right after Charlottesville, possible nuclear hostilities with North Korea and murky relations with Russian Federation, to his handling of the economy (accompanied by our interview on economic policy with the president). Even McConnell admitted this week he did not know what kind of bill on funding the government the President would sign.

Most have been to The Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he dropped in on 40 separate days, while The Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida has hosted the president on 30 visits.

Democrats have been seeking a deal to protect the "Dreamers", who have been shielded against deportation by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, which Trump halted past year. She said Republicans are "so incompetent and negligent that they couldn't get it together to keep the government open".

White House officials said Trump is looking forward to spending much of the year promoting his achievements on judicial nominations, deregulation and passage of the tax overhaul.

Trump's instinct is always to go on the attack.

Republicans seemed content to hope more Democrats will break as pressure builds and the impact of the shutdown becomes clearer. For the impasse to end, one side is going to have to back down, and the political consequences are huge for both of them.

Although the House and Senate were in session Saturday, it was unclear whether lawmakers would take any votes of outcome. But if no deal is reached before Monday, hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be furloughed. Trump says his administration will make a long-term immigration deal "if and only if it's good for our country".

Four Republicans opposed the House-passed plan Friday night.

Organizers say the video address Friday makes him the first president to speak to the march using that technology. He did tweet, making light of the timing by saying Democrats "wanted to give me a nice present" to mark the start of his second year in office.

Questioning Trump's capacity to cut deals is unlikely to sit well with the President.
