Snoop Dogg attacks racist Facebook messages by former Prospect assistant police chief

WAVE reports the messages date back to 2010, and some of them were sent by Shaw to a former Louisville Metropolitan Police Department recruit, giving "advice" about the treatment of juvenile black suspects.

Shaw served with LMPD for more than 20 years before joining the Prospect Police Department in 2012.

The news that a Louisville-area cop sent messages to a recruit urging him to shoot black people went public Friday, and the story struck a nerve across the country.

Shaw fought to keep the messages private, but a judge ruled that the records must be released this week.

The question was asked because the recruit was writing a paper about "the right thing to do". In one of the Facebook messages, the LMPD recruit asked Shaw what to do in a scenario in which he catches three juveniles smoking marijuana.

"F- the right thing", Shaw allegedly answered.

When Prospect Police Chief Jeff Sherrard "began his examination of the messages ... it soon became apparent to him" that Shaw violated police standards and he was suspended which gave the police department "additional time to review the matter".

Mike O'Connell sent a letter to Mayor John Evans in August alerting him to racially charged conversations on Facebook that former Prospect Assistant Chief of Police Todd Shaw allegedly had with a Louisville Metro Police Department recruit.

"Unless daddy is black", Shaw continued.

The former recruit was employed from October 2016 to February 2017 prior to graduating from basic academy.

Shaw's lawyer, Michael Burns, says he was just "playing" with these and other messages, and that that he "treated all people fairly" as a law enforcement officer.

In the letter to the mayor, O'Connell called Shaw's statements "deeply offensive and racist". It has also been reported that the county attorney's office said it would dismiss two dozen District Court cases in which Shaw was the sole witness, regardless of whether the defendants were black.

"There is no place in police departments for men or women who hold such strongly held prejudices, including recommending shooting people simply due to their race", O'Connell said in his letter.

Evans said the messages were not sent on city computers or over city telephones and the messages were found to be "abhorrent, disgusting, and reprehensible".

The shocking messages will lead to possible investigations into the Metro Police Explorer Program to see if there were any signs of sexual abuse.

"These actions spit in the face of the determined effort hundreds of thousands of law enforcement officers put forth to build trust and legitimacy in the communities they serve", he added.
