Southampton tried their best to secure Theo Walcott return, says Mauricio Pellegrino

Both teams felt they had to win, for their contrasting reasons, and Spurs nearly claimed the lead when Davies drove the ball powerfully across the area and Moussa Sissoko side-footed a volley from inside the six-yard area that just flew wide.

Pellegrino was also optimistic when asked about the prospect of Southampton adding new players before the end of the transfer window. "I enjoy doing my job - even when you are in hard moments", he said.

Harry Kane's 99th Premier League goal cancelled out a Davinson Sanchez own-goal as Spurs struggled for cohesion at a sodden St Mary's, losing ground in the race for Champions League qualification.

A point was not enough for Southampton to exit the relegation zone; they remain 18th, a point adrift of safety, while their streak of 11 winless matches is their worst run since 1998. We are very relaxed, calm, not concerned, we are happy with the squad that we have.

"We are disappointed because our game wasn't great, our performance wasn't the best. A lot of people love us and we love them".

Dele Alli has five goals and three assists in his last four league games against Southampton.

It took ten minutes for Tottenham to settle into the game, but once they did they unsurprisingly began to dominate the possession, and threaten from set pieces.

"They don't fight just for me", Pellegrino said.

"The way his attacking players are performing must give him the belief that they can extend a run in which they've picked up 13 points from the last 15, scoring 15 goals in the process". Because we are going to have all the week to train and we'll see if he can arrive in a good condition to play. But we had space in wide areas and we had a couple of chances. Most of the time we defended well.

"Mauricio's strategy has always been that if an opportunity arises that he thinks can improve the squad then we will need to look at it, but January is always a very hard window".

"Maybe he will play in the FA Cup, we will have all the week and we will see if he is in good position to play".

"For me every single game is an opportunity to improve". In three or four weeks time everything can change.

Pellegrino joked: "In Argentina we say that the job is the electric chair, it is not easy to stay in the seat".
