SpaceX successfully sends secret 'Zuma' satellite to space

SpaceX will attempt to launch a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station tonight.

The launch window opens at 8 p.m. and closes at 10 p.m.

As one South African news outlet cheekily commented on the SpaceX launch, "some South Africans wouldn't mind seeing Zuma blasted into space". After the launch, the rocket's first stage will attempt to make a return to a landing site along the Florida coast for what would be the company's 21 rocket landing.

SpaceX has scheduled a live feed of the launch on YouTube (we've embedded it below!) but you can also watch along on Space.com's webcast page.

Originally planned for a November launch, the mysterious Zuma mission may finally go to space on Sunday evening.

Northrop Grumman did reveal that Zuma is going to LEO, but that information doesn't tell us much; this range of altitudes houses a variety of spacecraft, from reconnaissance, weather and communications satellites to the International Space Station. Pacific. The rocket will be launching from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

A worldwide network of amateur satellite trackers will be on the lookout in the coming days and weeks in hopes of detecting the spacecraft and determining the details of its orbit.

Last year was a banner year for SpaceX, with 18 launches.

The company's first successful Falcon 9 rocket launch of 2018 was also probably the most secretive in the company's history.

The booster's two stages separated 2 minutes and 19 seconds into flight.
