Spotify Releases New Standalone Experimental Radio App That's Based On Playlist

Spotify tests a new easy playlist listening app.

Called Stations, Spotify claims it will be the "easiest way to listen to the music you love", according to the app's Google Play description.

Needless to say, Stations adapts to your tastes the more you listen - a feature in all modern streamers you may love or hate, as you often miss some great tunes because the algorithms are serving the genres that exist in your own bubble after a certain amount of time spent with them. Like Spotify's core service, there's a personalization element with user-based playlists created once enough music has been played for it to gather data.

YOU get a playlist, and YOU get a playlist!

With Stations, you can listen immediately, and switching stations is simple and seamless-no searching or typing needed. Otherwise, you'll have to create a free account and select a few artists as a starting point.

Another thing to note is that the Stations uses your Spotify account, offering familiar playlists like My Favorites, Discover Weekly, and Release Radar. As of June 2017, only 57 million of the 140 million active users were premium subscribers. The Spotify Stations app appears to be only available for users in Australia.

The Stations app functions pretty much like a radio music service that's akin to something like Pandora. It's a bit like Pandora in that it's also ad-based, but it's not quite as flexible. You will even not need to pay for a Spotify Premium subscription, according to the company. "Totally free", Spotify said on the app's Google Play Store page.

We haven't used it yet, but the app's design makes clear that Stations is created to reduce the steps and taps necessary to get to your music.

Spotify has released a new standalone app called Stations and it's dedicated to playing personalized playlists.
