Suter helps Wild down Blackhawks

The Minnesota Wild overcame a shaky start for a timely victory against a division rival.

Ryan Suter scored early in the third period during four-on-four play to make it 2-1 Wild after Patrick Kane took a tripping penalty while the Hawks were on a power play.

The Wild tied the game on a bad bounce, as Jonas Brodin's shot deflected off Tommy Wingels' stick and past Anton Forsberg midway through the second.

"We've talked about it, you guys have talked about it and we have to find a way in our room to have better second periods", said Phaneuf. "We weren't skating, no energy, turning a lot of pucks over, and they were playing in our end".

"I think sometimes when you're out there you probably have to pick your spots a little bit", Kane said of his high ice time. The Wild are a +115 underdog, while the total is set at 5.5 goals.

"From the tape we get and from the angles we saw, I thought it was definitely off-side because these things aren't spoken about lightly because I knew we were down 1-0 playing like that and then they're going to have a power play", Boudreau said.

Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook, a healthy scratch in Chicago's 8-2 win in Ottawa on Tuesday night, was back in the lineup and celebrated with his first goal since opening night.

But that's all the Blackhawks could muster. It was the first five-point contest of Kane's career, and the first time he had four assists in one game.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Buffalo Sabres coach Phil Housley is OK with tempers flaring on his struggling team after forward Evander Kane and defenseman Justin Falk had to be separated following a brief shoving match during practice.

Schmaltz scored twice during the second period, and was joined in that category on the stat sheet by Patrick Sharp (third goal in four games), Jonathan Toews and Jan Rutta. He pointed to a strong power play, where the Blackhawks went 4-for-6, as a difference. The over is 4-2-1 in those games. "From there, it's going to be good". Forsberg made several big saves down the stretch to keep the Hawks in the game, but the third and final failed power play doomed them to defeat. There's no timetable for his return.

Thomas Chabot, Mike Hoffman and Gabriel Dumont also scored to help the Senators rebound from an 8-2 home loss to Chicago on Tuesday night. They would be in the playoffs if the season ended postgame.

Entering Wednesday, the 32-year-old Seabrook had just one goal and 10 assists in 41 games and had often looked sluggish. He is expected to be out until the Wild returns from their bye week on January 20.
