The brand-new Dell XPS 13 model for 2018 is on sale today

Dell has launched a new refreshed version of its popular top of the line Dell XPS 13 laptop. This year's XPS 13 comes in a white and rose gold finish.

Now even more portable as the smallest 13-inch laptop on the planet, its stunning InfinityEdge display fits this 13-inch laptop in an 11-inch frame.

So, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week, Dell will be showing off snazzy XPS 13 PCs (the "13" indicates a 13-inch screen size) with new exterior and casing features to go with the usual software and feature upgrades you get with any new-generation machine. Dell claims the battery life on the latter models reaches nearly 20 hours, and it's still a very solid 11 hours if you go with the 4K display (see our review of the previous Dell XPS 13 for further discussion of actual battery longevity versus claimed figures, though).

With the brand new XPS 13, Dell claims it is introducing the next-gen design for the device, but the design is still more of the same. So how did we do that?

"This means the XPS 13 has sustained high performance while competitors' performance declines with continued use, making the XPS 13 the most powerful 13-inch in its class".

The new white and rose gold model highlights a woven glass palm rest that has a slight surface to it, separating it from the dark model's smooth palm rest.

Most laptops get pretty warm with heavy use, but the latest Dell XPS 13 should have no problem handling things without overheating.

The new Dell XPS 13 is the result of a company refining an already good laptop and ensuring that it remains a popular favourite with those on the move. In thin ultrabooks, the problem of laptop heating and throttling is evident but Dell XPS 13 manages this because of its low wattage 8th generation Intel CPU's and "GORE" Thermal Insulation.

Buyers have the option to select from the 4K UHD-or full HD resolution touch display, or a full HD non-touch display. "And with a heat resistance superior to metal, woven glass fiber also stays cooler to facilitate longer performance", he said. It is, after all, a Dell XPS laptop. The XPS 13 replaces the standard USB-A ports with three USB-C ones, two of which are Thunderbolt 3 ports.

Dell is also offering a Linux developer edition of the laptop which starts at £1,319 (around $1,780, AU$2,275) and comes with Ubuntu pre-installed. Battery life is being touted at 20 hours for the new XPS 13 with the Full HD display, while the 4K model can expect 11 hours of battery power; we'll have to give that a test before we can backup Dell's claims.

The new webcam also doubles up as an infrared scanner to support Windows Hello, but if facial recognition is definitely not your cup of tea, then the fingerprint scanner cleverly integrated into the power button might be up your alley.
