The Latest on the Looming US Government Shutdown

The bill would keep the government running past Friday's deadline for four more weeks, through February 16, but Democrats are likely to reject the measure without a fix for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which President Donald Trump is ending this year.

Lawmakers have until Friday to approve a short-term government spending bill, and Republicans will need Democratic votes to push the measure through. However, if House Republicans do not find enough votes for the bill, it will inevitably cause congressional chaos across the partisan aisle.

President Trump, with House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn og Texas, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, speaks to reporters after a recent retreat where GOP leaders made plans for 2018.

Democrats are pressing to add to the measure protections for younger immigrants who were brought to the USA illegally as children.

Hours after the US government announced it would again begin processing renewal applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals due to a federal court order, President Trump claimed that the program - which has granted a temporary legal reprieve to people who were brought to the USA illegally as children - was "probably dead".

Uh, Donald...repeat after me..."Republicans control both houses of Congress and the White House".

Schumer says that if there is a shutdown starting this weekend the public will blame Republicans.

Trump's hairpin turn to reject a bipartisan DACA deal that he'd promised to sign not only spurred a deep political divide on the issue, it also boosted the chance of a government shutdown.

Even if the Republican House leadership can bring their conference together and get the bill passed, there's still the problem of the Senate. Whether or not Republicans who have voiced frustrations with the strategy are actually willing to sink the stopgap spending bill and set off a government shutdown remains to be seen. By then, party leaders argue, Congress should come up with a broader budget agreement for the rest of the fiscal year.

If Congress doesn't reach an agreement on this immigration issue and pass a spending bill, the effect would be a government shutdown by the end of the week. But it appears that the vast majority of the 49 Senate Democrats are voting "no" on any bill that does not address DACA.

"Continuing resolutions are hurting the readiness of our troops, endangering our troops, and for those of us defense hawks, we find it very hard to support CRs", Byrne said. The program protected young undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children from deportation.

Trump has also called for ending the chain migration, the fastest and easiest way to gain legal entry into America, through sponsorship by a family member who is already a legal resident or citizen of the US.
