The White House's shifting narrative on Trump's 's-hole' comment

The White House's shifting narrative on Trump's 's-hole' comment

Donald Trump told reporters he's "the least racist person" as fallout continues from a vulgar remark about immigrants from Africa and Haiti attributed to the president following a meeting with lawmakers last week. "It is the American dream", Trump said.

"Whether you vote for me or don't vote for me, I really want to be your greatest champion, and I will be your champion", Trump said at the Haitian American roundtable past year.

Department spokesman Clayson Monyela said in a statement that both countries noted in Monday's meeting, which coincidentally fell on Martin Luther King Day in the United States, that Africa and the African diaspora had contributed significantly to the US. "No more Lotteries! #AMERICA FIRST".

Some Democrats have threatened to vote against legislation to extend government funding, which expires on Friday, unless protections for the Dreamers are included. Government funding expires midnight Friday without a deal in place, and some government functions will begin to go dark. They said Trump expressed a preference for immigrants from countries like Norway, which is overwhelmingly white.

The alleged expletive came during a Thursday meeting between Trump and lawmakers about immigration reform. Surprisingly, the White House didn't even initially deny the report about his racist comment, and then began a damage control exercise.

In the same week that he honored King by making a national park out of the ground where King was born and preached until his death, Trump denigrated practically the entire African diaspora, and left many Americans headed into the civil rights icon's birthday convinced that the leader of their country is a racist.

They also said that during the meeting, the President questioned the need to admit more Haitians to the US.

Trump built his candidacy and presidency around hard stances on immigration, vowing to build a wall along the Mexican border and cut legal immigration by half, among other positions.

Meanwhile, UN human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said: "These are shocking and shameful comments from the President of the United States".

Senator David Purdue, a Republican from Georgia, called charges that Trump is racist "ridiculous" and his reported remarks a "gross misrepresentation" of the White House meeting on immigration. "I think that would show real leadership", she said on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday.

"I am telling you that he did not use that word".

"I don't know if there is going to be a shutdown", he said.

Mr Cotton told CBS' Face The Nation that he "didn't hear" the word used - "and I was sitting no further away from Donald Trump than Dick Durbin was". Lindsey Graham said his memory "hasn't evolved" since Thursday's controversial Oval Office meeting. In the meeting, a bipartisan group of senators proposed a compromise which Mr Trump rejected.

Nielsen did dispute, however, Trump's assertion that DACA was "probably dead".

The newly appointed Department of Homeland Security secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, said on "Fox News Sunday" she didn't remember hearing the word used.

Trump wasn't apologetic and denied he was racist, instead blaming the media for distorting his meaning, a confidant of Trump's told The Associated Press. Deals can't get made when there is no trust!
