Trump comment on 'shithole countries' extremely offensive - Jessie Duarte

President Trump described Haiti, El Salvador and parts of Africa as "shithole countries" in a meeting with lawmakers in the White House Thursday, the Washington Post reported.

US President Donald Trump has expressed frustration over efforts of some US lawmakers to protect immigrants from Haiti and African countries, asking why America should accept citizens from "sh***ole" countries, triggering protests.

The group on Thursday was discussing the possibility of restoring protections for immigrants who have come from those countries, according to the Washington Post, which first reported the comment.

When the discussion turned to African nations, Trump asked why he would want "all these people from s--hole countries", adding that the United States should admit more people from places like Norway.

Trump was reported in December to have made similarly disparaging comments past year about people who had received U.S. visas in 2017. "When we say that president of the United States is racist, we're saying that he harbors these views and holds the power to implement which subjugates these people to oppressive systems".

He also mentioned Africa and asked, "Why are we having all these people from s***hole countries come here?".

On CNN, Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland, ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that the President's comments were "dangerous" and "do not represent America".

The source said Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin was explaining to him a proposal to end the visa lottery in exchange for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for countries such as El Salvador.

Trump was meeting with a bipartisan group of senators to discuss an immigration deal, according to NBC News, and balked at African and Central American immigrants coming to the country.

The American Civil Liberties Union said Trump "has been consistently honest about the white nationalism behind his immigration policies". The White House vigorously denied the claims in the story at the time.

"I condemn this unforgivable statement and this demeaning of the office of the Presidency", Baltimore Rep. Elijah E. Cummings said in a tweet.

"Guys I don't know how to break this to you, but I think the president might be racist", Noah confided.

Immigration has been a key issue for Trump during his election campaign and presidency.
