New York Republicans are split in their responses to Donald Trump's comments in which the president disparaged immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador, and African nations while calling for more immigration from Norway.

"People briefed on the Oval Office conversation on immigration reform Thursday said Trump questioned why the US would accept more immigrants from Haiti and what he called 'shithole countries" in Africa.

The National Action Network called on state senators to publicly denounce comments attributed to President Donald Trump on immigration at a White House meeting.

Trump on Friday denied using certain "language", but didn't offer more specifics.

In a statement Friday, the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC), which held events to help DACA applicants process their paperwork, said, "It is unacceptable that the president of the United States would attack a bipartisan effort with his racist, xenophobic, and ill-informed language and beliefs". She said the fight over immigration reform is turning ugly and seems to counter everything she learned about America in school.

"Other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country", he posted on Twitter.

Trump asked the elected officials if they knew just one member of his incoming cabinet - Ben Carson - according to two people in the room.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, confirmed the remarks, saying Trump "said these hate-filled things and he said them repeatedly". There is no transcript or recording of that meeting. There is a lot of trite rambling about how the president isn't really reflecting American values when, in fact, he is reflecting the values of many Americans.

Durbin, of IL, somberly countered Trump's version of events.

"Yesterday Senator Durbin and I met with President Trump at the White House to discuss our bipartisan proposal on border security and immigration".

"Sisters of Mercy are present in numerous countries President Trump categorized as 'shitholes, '" the sisters said in a statement.

"I know, because I'm living it", Love told reporters at Salt Lake City International Airport Thursday evening after touching down in Utah. "If someone should be ashamed it should be Trump", said Michel Aubry, 38, who lost his left foot when his house collapsed during the 2010 quake.

"When we see fundamental indecency and immorality, especially in high places, we need to stand up and SAY SOMETHING", he tweeted.

Once it was clear by mid-afternoon on Thursday that Trump was not going to support the bipartisan deal, the group led by Durbin and Graham issued a terse statement.

In November, the Trump administration rescinded deportation protection granted to almost 60,000 Haitians after the 2010 natural disaster and told them to return home by July 2019.

His comments came after worldwide figures and others accused Trump of making racist remarks during a meeting with Graham and other lawmakers discussing immigration reform. U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley had asked nations not to vote against the United States and said she would keep track of those who did.

Since taking office a year ago, Trump has pursued controversial policies aimed at curbing immigration into the United States as part of a hard-line "America First" agenda.
