Turkish court orders journalists' detentions to continue

The Turkish Constitutional Court has ordered the release of two government-critical journalists who have spent over one year in jail, the local media reported on Thursday.

Turkey's Constitutional Court on January 11 ruled to release jailed journalists Mehmet Altan and ┼×ahin Alpay, saying their rights had been violated.

The penal court re-evaluated Altan's case in the light of the Constitutional Court decision, but rejected his request to be freed, state-run news agency Anadolu said.

Journalists were accused of links to terrorist groups and attempting to overthrow the government and were among more than 50,000 people remanded in custody after the failed putsch.

Two Turkish courts ruled on Friday for the ongoing detention of two journalists, hours after the Constitutional Court had called for their release. The crackdown on democratic institutions has earned a rebuke from German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the European Union, which warned that Turkey was undermining its prospects of joining the bloc. The court "cannot act as if it's a first degree or appeals court" when it rules on individual applications, Bozdag said.

Numerous jailed reporters are charged with propaganda for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) or the networks of US-based Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara accuses of masterminding the 2016 coup attempt.
