Turkish forces push into Syria as Kurds fight back

The CNN Turk reported earlier that eight Turkish fighter jets F-16 took off from the Diyarbak·r air base to bomb Kurds' position.

The daily published a picture of Syrians waving a banner reading "We back Turkish military operation to shield our people from PYD terror".

A Turkish Government source explained to this newspaper that " necessary measures have been taken to avoid civilian casualties" and that Red Crescent has established camps to welcome population fleeing Afrin in population of Azaz, located in Syrian territory.

"We cannot pronounce how long the operation will take, talking about the duration of the operation is not appropriate", he said.

The United Nations Security Council will hold talks about the situation in Syria on Monday, French Foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on his Twitter feed on Sunday.

The YPG said the strikes killed six civilians and three fighters.

Analysts say that crucial for any major ground operation will be approval from Moscow which has a military presence in the area and a cordial relationship with the YPG.

The town's mayor said a Syrian national had died, and another 32 were wounded, according to the NTV broadcaster.

He also said a possible operation by Turkey in Syria's Afrin region is "completely backed by Syrian Turkmen".

President Erdogan has vowed to wipe out a corridor, first Afrin and then the nearby town of Manbij, from where the YPG has failed to withdraw.

Moscow said the conversation was a United States initiative.

A Syrian Turkmen commander has said the entire Middle East region would benefit if the PYD/PKK terror group is purged from Syria.

An AFP correspondent on the southwestern edge of the Afrin region saw a warplane bombing the western outskirts of the area early on Sunday.

Following a partial December withdrawal of its troops from Syria, where Russia intervened on behalf of the regime in September 2015, "the main objective of Russian forces remaining in the country is to ensure respect of the truce in de-escalation zones", the ministry said. For its part, it accused Syrian regime, Russian Federation and Urquía of having reached a pact to allow offensive. With this new front, the danger is that number will rise again.

"We know that without security in Syria, there can not be security in Turkey", Erdogan told members of his ruling party in Kutahya.

Meanwhile the Turkish threats of an intervention have also raised eyebrows in Washington, which has backed the YPG as it dislodged IS and gained control of the swathe of northern Syria up to the Iraqi border.

The operation is likely to escalate tensions between the U.S. and Turkey, which has accused Washington of overarming Kurdish forces and encouraging separatist aspirations.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said the operation will continue until "all the terror elements are removed", which he said include the PKK, YPG and the Islamic State. "But that does not mean we will accept being treated as sacrificial animals just because a couple of American generals want to embark on an adventure in the Middle East", Ilnur Cevik, an Erdogan presidential adviser, wrote in the Turkish daily Sabah.
