Turkish passenger plane skids off runway metres away from sea

A passenger plane skidded off the runway and was left stuck in mud off the edge of a cliff in Turkey.

A Pegasus airplane has skidded off the runway on Sunday after landing in the Turkish province of Trabzon, causing panic among the passengers.

Some 162 passengers and six crew members were on board the Boeing 737-800, which had departed the Turkish capital Ankara. All 168 passengers and crew aboard were safely evacuated with only minor injuries reported, but as the sun rose on Sunday, it became clear how close they had come to a far bigger disaster.

"We tilted to the side, the front was down while the plane's rear was up". Yavuz said the cause of the accident was not yet known and the airport was closed until 8am local time (5am GMT). "There was panic, people shouting, screaming", she told state-run news agency Anadolu.
