Ukip leader's girlfriend suspended over racist texts about Meghan Markle

The leader of Britain's anti-EU, anti-immigration UK Independence Party (UKIP) faced calls to resign on Sunday after his girlfriend reportedly made racist remarks about Prince Harry's fiancee Meghan Markle.

He hit the tabloid newspapers over Christmas when they reported that he had left his wife for 25-year-old model and UKIP member Jo Marney.

In the messages obtained by the Mail on Sunday, Jo Marney said Markle, an actress who is biracial, will "taint" the royal family.

Following the incident, Marney apologized for her comments and said that they were taken out of context.

Mr Bolton has said that his relationship is a private matter but that has not stopped the party calling a special meeting, due to take place this week, to consider the allegations. He must go quickly, he must go quietly, as soon as possible.

Mr Etheridge said that Mr Bolton should "go now", adding: "His lack of experience in politics has got the better of him".

She is believed to have sent the messages to a male friend. At last year's election in June, UKIP won 1.8 of the vote.

Ms Marney also describes Ms Markle, whose mother is black and whose father is white, as "a scrubber" and a "gender equality t***' who is "obsessed with race" and a 'dumb little commoner".

Peter Whittle, leader of UKIP's delegation in the London Assembly, also called for Marney to be "expelled altogether" for the "disgraceful remarks".

"UKIP does not, has not and never will condone racism", he said.

It piles more pressure on Mr Bolton, who has already attracted negative publicity by announcing he was leaving his second wife Tatiana Smurova for Ms Marney.

On Sunday he was accused on Twitter of being in Ms Marney's company when he appeared on television in mid-October. The opinions I expressed were deliberately exaggerated in order to make a point and have, to an extent, been taken out of context.

If Mr Bolton is ousted by the party's ruling National Executive Committee on Thursday, it would leave the party having to elect its fifth leader in barely 18 months.

"Jo was suspended immediately upon us receiving this information", Mr Bolton tweeted in reply. "Yet I fully recognized the offense they have caused", she said.
