UN Launches Investigation of DRC Attack That Killed 15 Peacekeepers

Dmitry Titov of Russian Federation, a former United Nations assistant secretary-general, has been appointed to lead the probe, which will examine the circumstances surrounding the attack, evaluate the peacekeeping mission's preparedness and provide recommendations for prevention of future attacks, the statement said.

Investigators will examine the peacekeepers' response to the attack, as well as other assaults on United Nations forces in the area, and make recommendations on how to prevent further violent incidents, Guterres said in a statement on Friday.

The probe will focus on the December 7 rebel attack that killed 15 peacekeepers and wounded over 40 others at a base near Beni.

The investigation team will travel to the DRC in the next few days and will also visit relevant countries in the Great Lakes region, said the statement.

Since October 2014, the hardline ADF - or Allied Democratic Forces - has been accused by Kinshasa and the United Nations of killing more than 700 people in the Beni region, where last week's attack also took place.

North Kivu province, which borders Uganda and Rwanda, has seen a particular uptick in killings and kidnappings between rival ethnic groups.

The U.N. Security Council said the attack was the worst on U.N. peacekeepers in recent years and said in a statement last month that incident was a "reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices made by these courageous women and men every day".
