United Nations to vote on new NK sanctions Friday

United Nations to vote on new NK sanctions Friday

The resolution introduced by the USA after intense lobbying won the support of China, which has had a special relationship with North Korea and had in the past opposed or tried to soften sanctions.

The US-drafted resolution would also cap off crude oil supplies to North Korea at 4 million barrels a year.

The North Korean spokesman cautioned that if the United States wants to "live safely" it should "wake up from its pipe dream of our country giving up nuclear weapons which we have developed and completed through all kinds of hardships".

The resolution imposes sanctions on the rogue regime's energy sector as well as limits on imports, exports, and overseas North Korean workers who are often used as a way for the regime to earn money for its weapons program.

The measures are in response to North Korea's test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on November 28 that marked an advance in Pyongyang's drive to threaten the USA mainland with a nuclear strike. The UN's top envoy to North Korea, Jeffrey Feltman, said this month that he was "deeply worried" about the prospects of a diplomatic solution to the crisis after meeting officials in Pyongyang.

It adds to already heightened tensions with North Korea following the country's insistence on adopting a nuclear missile programme.

Earlier, in August and September, the United Nations levied sanctions against North Korea while the U.S. took unilateral steps against the country in July, August, September, October and November.

In a speech before the United Nations General Assembly in September, Trump said the USA would "totally destroy" North Korea if necessary.

Pyongyang celebrated last month's launch as evidence North Korea is able to strike anywhere in the U.S. However, it is yet to be seen if he is willing to take the actions that would lead to a denuclearized North Korea. Also, North Korea makes money by sending its people to work in other countries and then pocketing most of their wages.

Haley said at the time that the Trump administration believed those new sanctions, combined with previous measures, would ban over 90 percent of North Korea's exports reported in 2016.

US President Donald Trump has been trading open insults with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un this year, saying he would "totally destroy" North Korea.

North Korean state television KCNA said that the missile is the "most powerful ICBM" yet to be tested by the country. The move followed United Nations sanctions, which had been imposed in response to recent missile tests by North Korea.
