United States signals deeper commitment in Syria

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Wednesday laid out a case for regime change in Syria while saying the US?military will remain engaged in the country.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that the United States owes Turkey an explanation and does not have any intention to build a Syria-Turkey border force. Alongside defeating IS and al-Qaida, Tillerson cited several longshot propositions as American goals: Securing a successful United Nations peace process, getting Syrian President Bashar Assad to leave power, ridding Syria of Iran's influence and eradicating all weapons of mass destruction in the country.

Indeed, Tillerson's remarks came as Turkey voiced strong objections to a US plan to create a force of about 30,000 Kurds to guard Syria's border. The US has at least 2,000 troops in Syria, according to Pentagon figures released in December. In undertaking these nation-building efforts, the State Department aims to expel Iranian influence from Syria, integrate refugees displaced by violence into cities and restore law and order to the region.

"This is the first time Washington has said clearly it has USA interests in Syria that it is ready to defend,"Bahra told Reuters".

"The United States believes that free and transparent elections... will result in the permanent departure of Assad and his family from power", said Tillerson.

The U.N. Special Envoy for Syria said earlier on Wednesday he had invited the Syrian government and opposition to a special meeting next week in Vienna.

Tillerson illustrated how the US would continue trying to isolate Assad's government even as the USA objective is "stabilization".

Once again, the US military's strategy has been cut and pasted from an earlier era. It will discourage countries from trading with his government.

Tillerson also praised Beijing for their unprecedented cooperation with increasing pressure on Pyongyang, but pointed out that the same could not be said for Russian Federation.

With the legal justification for the USA deployment in Syria already shaky, at best, with no authorization from the Syrian government, re-positioning the war away from ISIS and toward a war with the Syrian government and its allies makes an open-ended deployment even less tenable.

He said the USA expects that the desire for a return to normal life coupled with pressure from the outside "will help rally the Syrian people and individuals within the regime to compel Assad to step aside".

Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chrystia Freelan, greets Secretary of State of the United States, Rex Tillerson in Vancouver, B.C., January 16. The NATO ally is fiercely opposed to an expanded training program for Kurdish and Arab border guards in Syria.
