US Pacific military chief calls China a disruptive force

US Pacific military chief calls China a disruptive force

The three countries-the United States, Japan and India-have grown increasingly concerned about China's assertive military posture in the region and sought to draw closer, with Australia, in a "quad" of liberal democracies.

They were Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano of Japan's Self-Defense Forces, Admiral Harry Harris of the US Pacific Command, India's Chief of the Naval Staff Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba, and Chief of the Royal Australian Navy Vice Admiral Tim Barrett. "It is not the first time they have done so", Lu said.

At the dialogue forum organised by a New Delhi-based think tank and the Indian government, navy officials of India, Japan and Australia discussed China's increasing presence in the worldwide waters.

"From a perspective of normal logic, China's efforts to build a new type of worldwide relations should not make anyone who loves peace and seeks common prosperity feel discomfort and disturbed", said Lu. To pursue the development of such kind of global relations, we will not feel the relevant people should feel anxious. "If anyone sees such efforts as a 'disruptive force, ' we should ask them what are they anxious about?"

In a panel discussion on Indo-Pacific on Thursday, Ram Madhav, the general secretary of the ruling BJP said that the government was thinking of upgrading the tri-lateral Malabar naval exercise that now involves the US, Japan and India.

Harris reportedly also said China's action had cause disquiet in three members of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations. "We didn't hear the three other countries (say) they feel anxious about China's development", Mr Lu said, referring to Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia.
