USA in 15 hours: KQ's maiden NY flight to cost Sh89,000

Kenya Airways on Thursday started to sell the tickets for the inaugural flight, which will be the first from East Africa to operate a non-stop flight to NY.

Economy class fliers will pay Sh89,000 both ways, CEO Sebastian Mikosz announced at the launch on Thursday, adding travellers can start making advance online bookings.

Kenya Airways will operate two Boeing 787 Dreamliners on the route with daily flights. It will depart Jomo Kenyatta airport at 23:25, arriving at JFK airport at 06:25 the following morning, with return flights departing NY at 12:25 and landing in Nairobi at 10:55 the next day. Direct flights are expected to boost the numbers, with the travel time reducing from about 25 hours to about 15 hours.

Economy fliers on Qatar Airways will pay Sh93,000 from Nairobi to NY but they will stop at Doha for two and a half hours and the trip will take 22 hours and 30 minutes long.

Prices will cost as low as Sh90,000, with the ultra-long flight requiring four pilots, and 12 flight attendants as well as 85 tones of fuel either way.

He said: "Winning these awards would not have been possible without the passion and dedication of the Kenya Airways team and the strong support from our guests". He said the U.S.is already Kenya's top source market with over 100,000 arrivals per year, and that number is expected to increase.

"It is an essential piece of the puzzle that was missing". This development will most likely enhance trade, tourism and general customer satisfaction.

"This is an exciting moment for us". It fits within our strategy to attract corporate and high-end tourism traffic from the world to Kenya and Africa. Passengers on the flights - billed to be fastest connection between East Africa and the United States - will pay Sh89,000 and Sh257,634 introductory fares for an economy and Premier World tickets respectively.
