Video of Afghanistan shooting prompts U.S. military investigation

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis "is aware of the video", Chief Pentagon Spokesperson Dana White told reporters Thursday.

The US military officials have said they are investigating a video which purportedly shows a shooting incident in Afghanistan involving a US service member.

While reporting the shooting, Politico said it was unclear from the footage if any Afghan civilians were wounded.

Politico cites special operations veterans as saying that it was hard to judge what was shown in the video without knowing its context, but one said it was possibly "an operator not doing the right thing and firing a non-lethal round just to be a dick". The portion of the video drawing scrutiny takes place about 20 seconds into the 3-minute clip.

The head of USA forces in the Middle East and Afghanistan slammed the video in a statement to the news channel.

In a statement provided to Fox News, the head of US forces in the Middle East and Afghanistan condemned the video, saying it sends a "callous message" to the world.

The Afghan people and government would believe that American service members were callous and indifferent to the horrors of war or the suffering of innocent people trapped in conflict, Votel remarked.

Politico reported that the video was initially posted anonymously under the title "Happy Few Ordnance Symphony" and quickly removed.

U.S. Central Command said in a statement that if any of the video came from U.S. forces, it was neither official nor authorized.

"The amateur video posted on a public website gives us serious concern", Col. John Thomas, a spokesman for US Central Command, which oversees USA troops in Afghanistan, told CNN. According to Politico, the video contained footage allegedly captured by USA troops fighting Daesh's affiliate in Afghanistan. The first vehicle was identified as a version of the M-ATV armored vehicle outfitted for special operations forces.

Footage apparently recorded on a helmet camera shows a military-style shotgun being pointed at the truck cabin, and the window on the driver's side being shattered as it if had been shot.
