What's Different About This Year's Women's March?

In a tweet posted on Saturday afternoon, Donald Trump sent a confusing message which made it appear that the president believed that the Women's March was actually in support of his administration, as opposed to being in opposition. The White House has denied the accusations.

The theme of this year's event - one year after President Trump took office - is empowering women at the polls.

Those trying to call attention to issues such as health care, immigration and women's rights will be filling hundreds of cities across the state, country and globe on Saturday. The marchers carried signs protesting Trump's attack on women's reproductive rights, on immigrants and Muslims, on free speech, the free press and slammed his sexism, racism and all aspects of his "sh*hole" behavior.

Still others chanted "Equal work, equal pay". More than 250 additional cities and towns throughout the country and the world have also drawn large crowds. "We need some women in Congress, because obviously you can't get anything done".

The marches are being held on the anniversary of President Donald Trump's inauguration.

Thousands of United States demonstrators taking part in the Women's March on Washington gathered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to rally for women's rights, urge women to run for public office and call on citizens to engage on issues from sexual assault and racial equality to immigrant protections and gun violence.

What's Different About This Year's Women's March?

The idea was first sparked by a Hawaii retiree named Teresa Shook, who took to Facebook just hours after Trump's election. "It gave me a real sense of enthusiasm and that's why I joined the march again".

Baltimore, Maryland: Baltimore's local CBS affiliate reported that 7,000 people turned out for the city's 2018 march. The 2017 Women's March was described as the largest day of protests in the USA history with the participation of about 4.6 million marchers, according to the Independent. Additionally, the march in Washington in 2017 was about three times the size of the crowd at Trump's inauguration, crowd scientists said at the time. Las Vegas is hosting the kick off to the Women's March campaign "Power to the Polls". This year's event, which was inspired by the upcoming midterm elections, will focus on voter registration and inspiring more women to run for public office.

"It's clearer than ever that women are holding our democracy together in these risky times", she said. The wave of activism also seems to have led to a record number of women putting their names on ballots for 2018.

The event is Sunday from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m.at Sam Boyd Stadium. Comments from board member Jessica Scheller and organizer Jacquie Algee, both of Women's March Chicago. A full list of expected speakers can be found here.

"As a swing-state that will shape the Senate in 2018 and as home to a strong activist network, Nevada is the flawless place to commemorate the Women's March and continue building our electoral power", wrote organizers on the event's Facebook page.
