Why the Golden Globes Just Renewed My Faith in Hollywood

While the Time's Up movement did contain and control much of the conversation at last night's Golden Globes, and the internet is even buzzing with presidential speculation after Oprah's speech, I'd be remiss not to talk about that first Golden Globes ceremony I mentioned, the one where, as usual, men and white people did take home most of the hardware, and where even the men who traded in their white shirts for black ones and donned pins on their lapels refused to actually speak up for the women in the room.

THE 75th Golden Globes red carpet was all about one colour this year - black.

Multiple allegations against actors, filmmakers and Hollywood agents since October 2017 have led to numerous accused being fired, forced to step down, or dropped from creative projects.

"For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men".

Nicole Kidman won Best Performance for her performance in Big Little Lies, a drama based on Australian author Liane Moriarty's book that delves into the unspoken world of domestic violence. Rachel Brosnahan won the award for Best Actress in the same category for her lead performance. "Lady Bird" took best picture (musical or comedy).

The series also scooped up three other awards: best supporting actress (Laura Dern), best supporting actor (Alexander SkarsgÄrd) and Best miniseries or TV film.

The cast and crew of "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" from left, Martin McDonagh, winner of the award for best screenplay - motion picture, Sam Rockwell, winner the award for best performance by an actor in a supporting role in any motion picture, Frances McDormand, winner of the award for best performance by an actress in a motion picture - drama, and Graham Broadbent and Peter Czernin, pose in the press room with the award for best motion picture - drama at the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, in Beverly Hills, Calif.

"Trust me, the women in this room tonight are not here for the food", said McDormand.

The actress, who won the award for best actress in a limited series for her role in "Big Little Lies", thanked her mother, Janelle Kidman, during her acceptance speech, noting that she was an activist. "Wow, the power of women".

"We no longer live in the blank white spaces at the edge of print", said Moss, referencing Atwood's prose. "Time is up, we see you, we hear you and we will tell your stories". "There are so many films out there that are so good directed by women".

Stars including Reece Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Gal Gadot all wore black in a silent protest against the abuse, which centred on allegations made against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. Winfrey's speech thundered into a rallying cry for equality and justice for women everywhere, "whose names we'll never know", and a salute to men who support them.

"I want all the girls watching here, now to know that a new day is on the horizon", she said. "I've heard rumours he's insane and hard to work with", he said.

The Golden Globe Awards show is produced by Dick Clark Productions, which shares a parent company with The Hollywood Reporter. Ricky Gervais held sadistic sway over the show on the four occasions he hosted; accepting last year's DeMille award, Meryl Streep delivered a resistance rallying cry just days ahead of President Trump's inauguration.
