Wi-Fi Alliance Announces WP3

Wi-Fi Alliance Announces WP3

The organization, which comprises of tech stakeholders including Apple, Samsung, Qualcomm, Microsoft, Cisco and Intel, made the announcement at the CES 2018 on Monday.

For those unaware, KRACK (short for Key Reinstallation AttaCK) exploited vulnerabilities in the four-way handshake of WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access II) that happens when a client wants to join a protected Wi-Fi network.

Wi-Fi Alliance announced security enhancements and new features for its Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) Wi-Fi CERTIFIED technologies.

For now, WPA2 will still be deployed in Wi-Fi devices - with some improvements to help guarantee strong security protection for users.

A new security protocol for Wi-Fi will be launched before the end of the year, according the industry body responsible for the standard.

Wi-Fi Protected Access is used by billions of wireless devices around the globe, including smartphones, tablets and connected devices associated with the Internet of Things (IoT). Because the Wi-Fi Protected Alliance must certify hardware before it can use the WPA3 protocol, it could take several months before companies can support the new security protocol.

Passwords are at the crux of the WPA3 standards, even for Wi-Fi users who use awful passwords like "password". It will prevent hackers from trying to guess every possible combination of a password.

The standard will include better password protection and will simplify security configurations for devices that have a limited or no display interface.

In addition, there will be a 192-bit security suite, consistent with the the Commercial National Security Algorithm (CNSA) Suite from the Committee on National Security Systems, for Wi-Fi users with high security requirements, such as government organizations and businesses. "Another feature will strengthen user privacy in open networks through individualized data encryption", the Wi-Fi Alliance wrote.

The technology is expected to arrive on shelves sometime this year, with prices varying wildly depending on the device.

As explained to ZDNet by Mathy Vanhoef, a computer security academic, this is a newer kind of handshake between devices and networks.
