YouTube Introduces Tighter Requirements For Video Monetization Following Logan Paul Controversy

Previously, creators could join YPP if they had more than 10,000 views over the lifetime of their activity on the site.

These changes will make it harder to reach monetization for smaller channels.

As of this week, any new content creators that applied for the ad program will have to meet the three hellish criteria to be able to generate revenue.

YouTube states that these changes are to "better protect creators" - its Creator Blog states that a big reason for the changes is so "we can prevent bad actors from harming the inspiring and original creators around the world who make their living on YouTube".

To earn advertisement income, YouTube has introduced a YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

Google is modifying the prerequisites for having a commercial YouTube channel.

In a blogpost written by two YouTube executives, chief product officer Neal Mohan and chief business officer Robert Kyncl, the company said that "99% of those affected were making less than $100 per year in the last year, with 90% earning less than $2.50 in the last month".

"While we took several steps a year ago to protect advertisers from inappropriate content, we know we need to do more to ensure that their ads run alongside content that reflects their values".

Prior to the Logan Paul video controversy as well as others more before it, YouTube relied on its in-house algorithm to screen for copyright infringement and nudity.

The tighter restrictions are making it harder for creators to be found on YouTube and gain new followers.

Is this a ploy for YouTube to ensure money goes to their advertisers and not to other sponsors?

Starting today we're changing the eligibility requirement for monetization to 4,000 hours of watchtime within the past 12 months and 1,000 subscribers.

In the wake of the Logan Paul's suicide forest incident, YouTube announced that it is raising the subscriber and view bar for advertiser approval and channel monetization.

The issues have not affected YouTube's revenue, which represents a crucial growth area for Google, according to financial analysts.

On February 20th, 2018, we'll also implement this threshold across existing channels on the platform, to allow for a 30 day grace period. The company didn't name names, but the video network has been stymied by a wave of, videos aimed at kids and videos of children that became grounds for predators - all attracting millions of viewers and escalating criticism that its oversight is too lax.
