Australian leader to raise China, TPP in Trump talks

Australian leader to raise China, TPP in Trump talks

"The relationship we have with Australia is a terrific relationship and probably stronger now than ever before", Trump said in brief public remarks at the Oval Office ahead of his meeting with Turnbull.

Washington will honour the deal to take up to 1,250 asylum-seekers held in Australian detention centres on remote Pacific islands, so Trump and Turnbull will now seek to find common ground on China and the Trans-Pacific trade pact, which aims to cut barriers in some of the region's fastest-growing economies.

Mr Abbott went on to criticise some of Mr Turnbull's highest ranking cabinet ministers: Treasurer Scott Morrison, Trade Minister Steve Ciobo and Acting Prime Minister Mathias Cormann.

"You'd think a government that has too few policy differences with Labor might consider a change of emphasis that would make clearer the choice of who's really on the voters' side".

Turnbull has since met Trump in NY, but the Washington meeting will be their first in the context of an official state visit.

"We'll have to see", said Mr Trump, when asked if all options are still on the table if the sanctions don't work.

When it was his turn to speak, Turnbull returned the favour by complimenting Trump's tax decision to cut taxes, calling it "one of the most powerful arguments" he is using to persuade lawmakers to cut business taxes back home.

"President Trump has succeeded in making massive tax reforms here, the most significant in well over a generation and company tax has been reduced to 21 percent from 35 percent".

"The reality is, they're seeing stronger economic growth because of those tax cuts". The trade deal among 11 countries includes Australia, which also has a bilateral free trade partnership with the United States.

Trump congratulated Turnbull on "your immigration reforms and on Australia's commitment to merit-based immigration".

Trump has not been to Australia yet as president.

"We have been fighting side-by-side in freedom's cause ever since".

"Maybe very unfortunate for the world", the president said. "100 years of mateship and 100 more to come", he said.

While in Washington, Turnbull will address the U.S. National Governors' Association.

Australia's approach to China, easily its largest trading partner, has typically been more circumspect.
