Central Florida students stage walkout for school safety, gun control

The students entered a gun-friendly political climate in Tallahassee, where lawmakers have rebuffed gun restrictions since Republicans took control of both the governor's office and the Legislature in 1999.

After days of funerals for those killed in the attack, teachers began the emotionally fraught process of returning to the school Friday to collect belongings from classrooms that have been off-limits since the slayings.

Hundreds of students from Maryland schools left class to rally at the U.S. Capitol.

Broward teachers union president Anna Fusco met with the teachers as they returned to campus Friday hailing them as "incredibly fearless and strong".

"My lovely daughter, I'm never going to see her again. I promise we will follow #MarchForOurLives", wrote another student on Twitter.

In a letter to Prince William County parents, students and staff, Superintendent Steve Walts said students will face disciplinary action for leaving school "in keeping with the PWCS Code of Behavior".
