Dog Food Withdrawn from Store Shelves Over Concerns About Euthanasia Drug Contamination

JM Smucker Co. voluntarily withdrew some shipments of 27 pet food products after media reports of pentobarbital contamination was found in some of its dog food brand Gravy Train.

The recall comes after Washington D.C. news station WJLA found pentobarbital in multiple cans of Gravy Train dog food.

Though the low levels were not thought to be lethal to pets, the drug is still not permitted.

A product recall at the consumer level has not yet been initiated and as of Thursday morning neither Smucker nor any agencies in the government revealed whether any of the dog food implicated had reached retail store shelves where consumers had access to purchase it.

Thixton says based on current labeling standards, it's impossible for consumers to know what they're really feeding their pets.

The move follows the recent recall issued by The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over fears that several pet food products may be contaminated with Salmonella. Further to this, company said that it is investigating how the euthanasia drug pentobarbital got into its supply chain, and it is focusing on a single supplier, of a minor ingredient used at one manufacturing facility.

"We launched and are conducting a thorough investigation, including working closely with our suppliers, to determine the accuracy of these results and the methodology used". In the statements on their websites, the company said they "do not use 3D or 4D meat such as dead, dying, disabled, or diseased animals". The amount of the drug found in the tested food would not necessarily be enough to cause harm to an animal, but its mere presence is more than enough to warrant a full investigation.
