Fla. sheriff visits teen who took bullets for classmates

Anthony Borges is now recovering in hospital with multiple gunshot wounds after surviving the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 dead.

A Florida student who was shot five times while trying to protect his classmates during the shooting last week survived.

Borges, a soccer player at the high school, was shot in both legs and has a shattered thigh bone.

Yesterday the Broward Sheriff's Office confirmed the fundraising page was legitimate after the Sheriff paid a visit to Anthony in the hospital.

After multiple surgeries, Borges is in stable condition in the hospital, but Sheriff Scott Israel of Broward County said he still has a long road ahead of him. Another bullet went through his back.

Ex-student Nikolas Cruz has reportedly confessed to carrying out the attack, which left 17 people dead and more than a dozen wounded. Cruz was a previous student of the school and was expelled for disciplinary reasons.

"None of us knew what to do", Rodriguez said.

Fellow student Carlos Rodriguez told ABC News that Anthony saved his life.

Many people have contributed to a GoFundMe page to help Anthony Borges and his family as news of his heroism has spread.

All the other students in the class remained uninjured.

Royer Borges said he has heard of the courageous selflessness his son showed and expressed pride in his boy. "My son has a long journey ahead", he said, adding that his boss had started a GoFundMe account for therapy and so that Anthony's mom and dad could be by his side.

"I only ask that people pray for him", Royer Borges said. A woman wrote, "Bless you, for being so courageous and protecting your classmates".
