George RR Martin Offers Update on 'The Winds of Winter'

"The second is hardly begun".

'The first volume should be completed soon, ' Martin wrote.

Despite those fiercely optimistic theories that George R.R. Martin had wrapped up his next A Song of Ice and Fire book, The Winds of Winter, it appears the fantasy author actually remains in no hurry to finish the series on which HBO's Game of Thrones is based. "Abridged versions of some of those pieces appeared as 'The Princess and the Queen, ' 'The Rogue Prince, ' and 'The Sons of the Dragon, '" he writes, "but these are the full versions, together with some chapters that have never appeared anywhere". Author George R.R. Martin will release two new books in the near future, but neither will be book six, "Winds of Winter".

Fans have been waiting for The Winds of Winter for years at this point, with no definitive answer on when it will actually arrive. Consequently, it's looking more likely that by the time Game of Thrones Season 8 makes its six-episode (undoubtedly tragedy-laden, ) series conclusion in 2019, the chronological state of the novels will still be the same as they've been since the release of A Dance with Dragons back in July of 2011.

On Martin's blog, Not A Blog, a fan asked if his Thrones world encyclopedia Fire and Blood Vol. 1 will be published before or after The Winds of Winter.

Martin's statement dashed the hopes of fans eagerly expecting the "ASOIAF" installment to be released this year. I think it will be out this year.

Diehard fans should be happy with some new, canonical and official A Song of Ice and Fire material to work with in the meantime. Now, given the latest update from Martin himself, it seems that it's possible the eighth and final season of the show will come and go before even the sixth book hits store shelves.
