How Much Money Would 'Cloverfield Paradox' Have Made in Its Opening Weekend?

How Much Money Would 'Cloverfield Paradox' Have Made in Its Opening Weekend?

But people apparently watched it, as Nielsen has estimated five million people watched it in the first week. It is worth mentioning that Nielsen, a third-party service not affiliated with Netflix, only accounts for USA viewers on connected TVs (not including mobile devices and computers), but even taking that into account, it's clear that The Cloverfield Paradox won't go down as one of the streaming platform's greatest hits.

But in a way, these numbers for Paradox are nearly one-of-a-kind, considering the circumstances in which the film was released. On its second day of release (Monday, Feb. 5), The Cloverfield Paradox was watched by an average of 1.3 million viewers in the U.S. Its 3-day total was an average of 2.8 million viewers, and its 7-day total was 5 million average viewers-again, that number only includes those that watched the film on a TV.

According to available Nielsen data, the third entry in the Cloverfield series hit 2.8 million viewers three days after its release before climbing to 5 million over its first week. There's an argument to be made that while more casual viewers were willing to check out Paradox through Netflix, the film might not have motivated those same viewers to drive out to a theater and spend money, meaning the hypothetical box office gross would have not been as high. But Netflix would surely point to the buzz it created in sucessfully springing such a surprise during the most watched TV event of the year and deem the movie worth every penny. What's more, universally poor reviews (it now holds an 18 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and bad word-of-mouth would have kept theatergoers away as well. And now, we have somewhat of an idea of just how many people checked out the film.

Directed by Julius Onah, The Cloverfield Paradox stars Daniel Brühl, Elizabeth Debicki, Aksel Hennie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O'Dowd, John Ortiz, David Oyelowo, and Zhang Ziyi, and follows a group of astronauts aboard a space station who have to find a way back home after being accidentally transported to another dimension following a particle accelerator experiment.
