India ignoring facts and ground realities: Maldives Foreign Minister

"It is our honest desire to see that democracy in Maldives is restored and the situation returns to normal".

"The assertion by the Government of India that the extension of the State of Emergency by the People's Majlis was unconstitutional is a clear distortion of facts, which ignore the Constitution and Laws of the Maldives", added Asim.

Maldives" Minister of Foreign Affairs said that the Indian Government has ignored the "facts and ground realities' in the country.

"The Government of Maldives reiterates its firm commitment to work closely with the worldwide community, including India, to address the concerns they might have", it added.

On India's criticism of President Yameen's decision to extend the emergency by 30 days on Tuesday, Male said New Delhi is issuing statements without taking into consideration the prevailing condition in Maldives.

The Maldives on Thursday brushed aside India's strong concerns over a 30-day extension of a state of emergency and said the world community should refrain from any intervention in the island nation. It also said the delay in the resumption of the political process would impact the restoration of normalcy in the Maldives.

The emergency in Maldives was imposed on February 5, after the Chief Justice of Supreme Court, Hamid Ali, had annulled the conviction of nine opposition leaders, including exiled former president Mohamed Nasheed.

The extension of a state of emergency in the Maldives was unconstitutional, the country's prosecutor general has said, according to two sources and local media on Wednesday.

After the Maldives Parliament's approval, ruling party legislators sought the opinion of the Supreme Court, which on Wednesday issued a temporary ruling ordering the Parliament and the "relevant state authorities" to act upon the extension. Only 38 MPs were present for the vote, which took place hours before the state of emergency was due to expire, despite 43 lawmakers being needed for the vote to take place as required by the Constitution, Maldives Independent news website reported. The order was, however, rescinded shortly after the declaration of the state of Emergency.

Reports of her impending resignation have also surfaced, given the nature of the letter and her absence at the sitting, which was boycotted by parliamentarians aligned with the opposition, has amplified them.
