Kim Jong Un's sister in historic visit to South Korea

Kim Jong Un's sister in historic visit to South Korea

US officials have not ruled out the possibility that the vice president might meet a North Korean official at the Olympics.

Protesters burnt North Korean flags and pictures of Kim Jong-un, as around 800 people gathered for a march towards the stadium where the Olympic torch will be lit in what Seoul wants to become a symbol of peace.

The dignitaries are expected to join other foreign visitors - including Vice President Mike Pence and Japan's Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe - at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

South Korean media have been speculating about whether Mr Kim will send a personal message to Mr Moon through his sister and, if so, whether it would include a proposal for a summit between the two leaders.

Last June, the United Nations Security Council included Mr. Choe in a list of 14 North Korean officials designated for an asset freeze and travel ban for their involvement in the North's nuclear weapons program.

But an official of the South's Unification Ministry indicated that the plane used by the delegation would not be subject to the sanctions. In approving this agreement, the International Olympic Committee said on January 20 that the Korean athletes and officials will march behind the Korean Unification Flag - a blue Korean Peninsula against a white background.

Kim Yo-jong shook hands with Mr Moon at the ceremony.

They could also see a performance by a visiting North Korean art troupe in Seoul on Sunday before heading back to Pyongyang.

It began with thousands of goose-stepping troops lined up in Kim Il Sung Square to form words and slogans.

Pence meant to counter "what Prime Minister Abe rightly called a "charm offensive" around the Olympics" by the North, he said.

"Whatever images may emerge against the powerful backdrop and idealism of the Olympics, North Korea has to accept change".
