Lions make it official, hire Matt Patricia after Patriots' Super Bowl loss

The Detroit Lions have officially named their new head coach - and it's no surprise.

With the Patriots having finally concluded their season, the news that defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is leaving to become head coach of the Detroit Lions is now official.

In six seasons under Patricia, the Patriots defense never finished outside the top 10 in points allowed.

Patricia is Lions general manager Bob Quinn's first coaching hire since taking over the Lions.

Linebacker Eric Lee was the only Pats player to speak to the media yesterday when the team returned to Foxboro, but when asked about Patricia's new gig would only say, "I have no opinion on that".

"This position comes with great responsibility and I will commit every ounce of my energy to this football team", Patricia said.

"We met with several very impressive candidates, but Matt really stood out in his interview and clearly became the best choice for the job", Lions president Rod Wood said in a statement.

In it, he thanked the Detroit Lions organization for giving him his new opportunity as well as the New England Patriots organization for 14 great years. This was an expected hire, as the Lions remained one of the last two National Football League teams with a vacancy at head coach. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (R.P.I.), where he played guard and center. Star defensive end Ezekiel Ansah is slated to hit free agency in March, so the Lions could enter next season without one of their few studs on that side of the ball.

Patricia, the New England Patriots' defensive coordinator, spent the last 14 seasons in New England and worked 12 of those years alongside Quinn. He also has a degree in aeronautical engineering.

Quinn fired coach Jim Caldwell last month with a record eight games above.500 over four years and postseason appearances in 2014 and 2016. "He's been good for us and good for me".
