Maldives Army surrounds Parliament amidst political turmoil

That same year in August, President Gayoom gave approval for the new Constitution paving democracy in the country as presidential elections of multi-party was held for the first time. The government has frozen the work of the parliament and has ordered the army to counteract any attempt of impeachment of President Abdulla Yameen by the Supreme Court.

Yameen has been president of the Maldives since 2013, and has been reportedly accused of corruption and violations against freedom of speech. Since then, Yameen's government has cracked down on dissent and jailed nearly all the political opposition, reversing several years of democratic progress.

Responding to the state of emergency, the USA urged restraint on Monday.

On Monday night, Mr. Yameen's estranged half-brother and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, now aligned with the main Opposition, was also arrested in his residence.

"We hope relevant parties can properly resolve the differences through dialogue and consultation and restore normal order as soon as possible and maintain national and social stability", the ministry's spokesperson Geng Shuang said.

But the emergency declaration it must be officially conveyed to parliament within two days, according to officials.

The 15-day state of emergency has seen the suspension of parliament, with security forces swarming the Supreme Court.

"The emergency means the Supreme Court activities are suspended and nobody is in charge of the judiciary".

In a letter to the Supreme Court on Monday, Yameen wrote that judges had encroached on the powers of the state and called its recent ruling an "infringement of national security and public interest".

China and other countries are warning travelers about the political crisis in the Maldives.

The Indian government directed all its citizens to defer any non-essential travel to Maldives until further notice. China is reportedly among the biggest sources of tourists to the archipelago known for its luxury resorts. Updated travel advice from the U.S. State Department warned that the protests were expected to continue.

Maldives President Abdulla Yameen on Tuesday said the emergency decree is to investigate "this plot, this coup" of Supreme Court ruling, reported AP.

Judges are "without any food now", Suood said, adding that the chief justice asked the public "to protect him and the institution".

Violent scenes erupted on the streets after President Abdulla Yameen defied a Supreme Court ruling handed down last week which revoked terrorism charges against nine leading opposition figures.

In addition to ordering the release of the political prisoners, the court also reinstated 12 lawmakers who had been ousted for switching allegiance to the opposition.
