MetLife, Symantec dump NRA as calls for company boycotts spread

Enterprise Holdings, which owns Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent a Car, released a statement on Thursday announcing its plan to drop a deal that provided discounts to members of the NRA. In tweets as early as February 16, two days after the shooting, an official Twitter account for the company began telling people it "is no longer affiliated with the NRA". ThinkProgress noted that First National Bank offered two NRA cards, each with a $40 bonus, and touted it as "enough to reimburse your one-year NRA membership!"

That follows a move by First National Bank earlier Thursday to end a credit-card promotion with the gun-advocacy group. The bank said the decision was a response to "customer feedback [that] caused us to review our relationship with the NRA".

The insurance company on Friday said it would stop underwriting NRA-branded insurance policies for gun owners a program called "NRA Carry Guard", Reuters reported. The NRA "member benefits" page offers savings on a credit card, hearing aids, life insurance, home security systems, auto purchases, moving fees, prescription drugs, and branded checkbooks, among other things.

"On Wednesday, a Visa spokeswoman stressed that the company strives to make its payment services available to everyone", she continues.

Symantec, MetLife, Enterprise are among big brands cutting ties with the NRA. "The "valuable 5-star benefits" promised include not just a subscription to an NRA magazine and a gun-owner liability protection policy but also savings on insurance, identity theft protection, hearing aids, auto rentals, moving vans, shipping, and even wine", Kira Lerner and Josh Israel wrote on its site.

Members of the NRA have access to a host of discounts on its website, ranging from life insurance to wine clubs. "Businesses have a choice whose business they prefer", tweeted another.

"This is a bold move for First National of Omaha but also a risky one because passions burn so hot on both sides of the topic of guns", Matt Schulz, senior industry analyst at CreditCards.com tells MarketWatch's Mike Murphy in an email.

A representative for MetLife did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

He accused Democrats and "elites" of wanting to "eradicate all individual freedoms".
