Minnie Driver cuts ties with Oxfam after charity's sex scandal

He told Belgian newspaper De Standaard: "A lot of people, including in the global media, will be blushing with shame when they hear my version of the facts".

In his first public response to last week's accusations of sex parties during his time running the charity's operations in Haiti after the 2010 quake, Roland Van Hauwermeiren was quoted as also telling De Standaard reporters who called at his apartment on the Belgian coast that his family had cut him off. "Everything I see everywhere is hard to bear and pains me".

"Parties every week? Fancy villas?"

Oxfam has said that a man it dismissed over sexual misconduct allegations in Haiti in 2011 was subsequently hired by the charity as a consultant in Ethiopia later that year.

Oxfam has since faced further allegations that prostitutes were also used by its staff in Chad in 2006, where Mr van Hauwermeiren was the charity's country chief at the time.

The retired South African church leader said he was stepping down as a global ambassador for the charity, saying he was "deeply disappointed by allegations of immorality and possible criminality" by some Oxfam staff.

Global aid group Médecins Sans Frontières has fired 19 workers in 2017 over sexual harassment and sex abuse claims.

Well, it turns out some aid workers have been sexually abusing the disadvantaged in Haiti - and elsewhere - by sleeping with prostitutes, some of whom may have been underage.

Reuters could not reach Van Hauwermeiren for comment. "Women paid with money from the organisation?"

She said she was horrified by the allegations.

Some 1,270 people cancelled their direct debits to Oxfam between Saturday and Monday after the Haiti revelations were first reported - nearly double the average of 600 cancellations per month.

Several sponsors and partners of Oxfam including Visa and the retail chain Marks and Spencer have also said they are examining the situation.

However, the charity stressed the sacking "was not related to sexual misconduct and was not connected to the case in 2011". No apology for the ugly betrayal of the people they exist to help.

A spokeswoman added: "We are extremely grateful to all those who continue to support us, those who have made additional gifts, and those who have sent messages of support".

The Oxfam scandal has been escalated by critics in the Conservative Party who've used it to argue for a reduction in government spending on the aid sector in favour of domestic priorities.

The Charity Commission is expected to set out the terms of its statutory inquiry into Oxfam on Thursday, following an all-day meeting with the charity at its offices in Oxford on Wednesday.

However, Firth said it would be a tragedy if the charity's work came to a halt.
