MSU Interim President Engler takes steps to remove Nassar's former boss

MSU Interim President Engler takes steps to remove Nassar's former boss

Graduate students at Michigan State University want trustees and the new interim president to step down.

The university is moving to fire Strampel, who is on medical leave. He still has tenure, however, which protects his employment as a Michigan State faculty member. "We are sending an unmistakable message today that we will remove employees who do not treat students, faculty, staff, or anyone else in our community in an appropriate manner". In addition to concerns about his professionalism, Engler cited issues with Strampel's personal behavior when asking for his tenure to be revoked.

The university also says it will not cover Strampel's legal expenses in relation to the Nassar matter.

Strampel's lawyer, Steven Stapleton, declined to comment on Engler's announcement.

Pat Fitzgerald, a former Chicago federal prosecutor hired by the university, sent a letter to investigators Friday - the deadline imposed by the state attorney general's office. Strampel told Nassar after he was cleared that the doctor needed to avoid skin-to-skin contact when using the procedure in question, make sure a chaperone was in the room with him and the patient, and fully explain the procedure before doing it.

Strampel has also been criticized for his email correspondence in 2016, when Nassar's serial abuse started to come to light.

Nassar was sacked in 2016 for violating the rule.

Strampel, who supported Nassar after the Indianapolis Star broke news of the former USA Gymnastics team doctor's misconduct, is now a target of several lawsuits by the disgraced doctor's victims. They apparently did not talk much.

Strampel left the position amid the scandal surrounding Larry Nassar. Additionally, the school's radiology department chairman, Suresh Mukherji, has been suspended.

Engler spokesman John Truscott told the Lansing State Journal that he couldn't provide specifics, but "we've said we expect full cooperation with all investigations, and if that doesn't happen there will be consequences".

Strampel and Mukherji were interviewed by a campus detective and an FBI agent last March as part of an investigation into restrictions that were supposed to have been put on Nassar after a 2014 Title IX probe.

He said then that he had been in the chain of command between Strampel and Nassar, but Strampel and another doctor did most of the day-to-day supervision and decision-making related to MSU Sports Medicine.

He says the school this week produced about 25,000 pages constituting Dr. William Strampel's electronic calendar entries.
