Myanmar, militias ink peace pact with India as witness

She maintained that the NCA is not the end of the peace process but the beginning of the process, the beginning of political dialogue and armed conflict reduction and through the dialogue and negotiation, political issues are to be resolved.

The Myanmar government signed a ceasefire pact with two rebel groups in Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday, reported the Myanmar Times.

"We believe in Daw Aung San Suu Kyi but we'll have to see what happens on the road ahead because the government and the military are not very united", LDU chairman Kya Khun Sar told AFP ahead of the signing.

Reacting to today's signing ceremony, MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) Spokesperson Ravish Kumar said, "India supports the Myanmar peace process".

"Given the positive bilateral relationship between India and Myanmar and the significance for India of the Myanmar peace process, Myanmar had earlier invited India (together with China, Japan, Thailand, UN and EU) to sign the NCA as worldwide witnesses in October 2015 NSA Ajit Doval had represented India on that occasion", MEA said, in a statement.

According to rumors, the Arakan National Council had also planned to sign the NCA along with NMSP and LDU but representative of the party did not participate in the signing event.

A third meeting of the 21st Century Panglong Peace Conference, which followed the initiation of the NCA in 2015, is likely to be held this later this month to discuss fundamental principles for the establishment of a federal system guaranteeing the autonomy of each ethnic group and the disarmament process.

He said, "Given the positive bilateral relationship between India and Myanmar and the significance for India of the Myanmar peace process, Myanmar had earlier invited India (together with China, Japan, Thailand, UN and EU) to sign the NCA as worldwide witnesses in October 2015".

Two ethnic rebel groups on Tuesday joined Myanmar's long-delayed peace process, a small step forward in ending decades of civil strife.

India has been concerned over some militant groups from the North-East region taking shelter in Myanmar.
