Nebraska basketball players take stand against white nationalist's disturbing video

Nebraska basketball players take stand against white nationalist's disturbing video

After mulling a boycott, the Nebraska men's basketball team has made a decision to wear a t-shirt saying "Hate will never win" Saturday before a game against Rutgers, in protest of a white nationalist on campus.

[Nebraska coach Tim] Miles said the vote was lopsided against a boycott.

So on Friday, after Nebraska basketball players saw the video, the team chose to take action by agreeing to wear T-shirts with the slogan, "Hate Will Never Win" across the chest. You can hear his comments live on AM 590 ESPN Omaha on The Bottom Line with Mike'l Severe, or watch them streaming on 3NewsNow.com or on the 3NewsNow Facebook page. The players also were making a video rejecting racism and hate that will be shown on the Pinnacle Bank Arena screens during the game.

They just want to make a strong stand, he said.

Much of Nebraska's basketball team is comprised of black players, and Kleve said in one of his videos that the Founding Fathers didn't care about the opinions of Mexicans or African Americans.

Nebraska spokeswoman Leslie Reed said the group that released the initial video was Antifa Nebraska and is not a campus-affiliated group. Miles responded to the tweets: "I love these young men!" About 300 students turned out for a rally Wednesday to oppose hate speech. Miles, who attended the rally, said his players chose not to go.

Some students called for Kleve to be kicked out of school.

Miles said he sensed after a Monday night road win in Minnesota that his players were subdued. "It hit close to home. The neighbor says, 'This isn't supposed to happen here'".

"I'm proud of the guys", Miles said.

Nebraska players are taking a stand against racism and violence.

"I think we're in a good place right now", Miles said.
