Nigerians react to Jacob Zuma's resignation

Cape Town - Cope says that former president Jacob Zuma should have been impeached, rather than being allowed to resign.

As was earlier reported by TUKO.co.ke, Zuma stepped down as president of South Africa on Wednesday, February 14, amid mounting pressure for him to leave office or face impeachment.

Mr Ramaphosa was the only candidate nominated for election after two opposition parties said they would not participate.

"I will try very hard not to disappoint the people of South Africa", Mr Ramaphosa said in ending his speech to parliament shortly after it elected him.

But Zuma warned the ANC against taking a similar approach this time around, pointing out the decision to recall Mbeki had resulted in a breakaway party, which had been a setback for the ANC.

The South Africa President, Jacob Zuma retired from his post on Wednesday.

Ramaphosa's first state of the nation address is expected to take place on Friday.

In reaction to Zuma's resignation, ratings agency Moody's said it was focused on the new leadership's response to economic challenges and the progress it makes in pushing through policy reforms.

Addressing a separate conference a earlier in the day, Zuma said the ANC had failed to explain what it was that he had done wrong to deserve such an exit.

If Zuma had not resigned he would have bene removed through a vote of no confidence in Parliament today.

A smaller opposition party, the Economic Freedom Fighters, has made a similar statement. He stated that the whole parliament is guilty as Zuma and no one deserves to be president. That office, like so many others under Mr Zuma's watch, has been mired in mismanagement and is not able to complete its task in an effective manner.

The police ministry says police are seeking another five suspects in a probe of a dairy project in which state funds earmarked for local farmers allegedly were siphoned off to a company tied to the Gupta family.

But he leaves office with several scandals hanging over him, and with South Africa's economy in dire straits. Those who were detained appeared in court on Thursday.

In a televised address to the nation late on Wednesday, the 75-year-old said he was a disciplined member of the ANC, to which he had dedicated his life.

Duarte also encouraged lawmakers to support Zuma's deputy and successor as leader of the ANC, Cyril Ramaphosa. Ramaphosa is scheduled to fill his role until elections next year.

The resignation brought an end to nearly a decade years that was plagued with a lot of scandals.Cyril Ramaphosa who was elected as the President back in December is expected to replace him.

Mr Zuma, who had no formal education, was jailed alongside Nelson Mandela under apartheid and rose through the ranks of the ANC to take power in 2009.

Now, Ramaphosa believes the anti-corruption campaign will reinvigorate supporters of the ANC who were previously disillusioned with the party.

The Guptas and Mr Zuma deny all allegations of wrongdoing.

"The Deputy President has already been sworn in as Acting President". It wants new elections, rather than the ANC deciding on the identity of the new president.

Media captionWho is Cyril Ramaphosa? He quickly spoke out against the corruption that had weakened the ANC, which has been in power since the end of white minority rule in 1994, and sped up the momentum that led to Mr Zuma's resignation. The sources disclosed that the decision came after marathon talks on the fate of the leader, whose scandal plagued years in power darkened.

Ramaphosa, who has vowed to fight corruption and revitalize the economy, is seen by business leaders and investors as well placed to turn around the economy.
