No US plans for bid for '26 Olympics

No US plans for bid for '26 Olympics

United States Olympic Committee (USOC) chairman Larry Probst has backed chief executive Scott Blackmun today following criticism around the way he responded to the gymnastics sexual abuse scandal. He thanked the survivors for their bravery and the judicial system for convicting "the monster who committed these awful acts".

Probst said the USOC would fully cooperate with an independent investigation, conducted by Ropes and Gray law firm in Boston, examining "who knew what", but that until its conclusion Blackmun would remain as CEO. "We think he did what he was supposed to do and did the right thing at any time".

But even as USOC leaders say they will await those results, they said Blackmun has the support of the USOC board.

"I've known him for a very long time". "I felt he's done a great job for us and deserves to have everything cleared". He has come under fire in recent weeks for his handling of the scandal.

Two US Senators have called for Blackmun to resign in the wake of a Wall Street Journal report saying Blackmun was contacted by USA Gymnastics officials about Nassar in July 2015, more than a year before the abuse allegations became public. The USOC responded to those allegations by saying it alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2015.

US lawmakers on Thursday began a second congressional investigation into USOC, USA Gymnastics and other gymnastic organisations over the abuse scandal. Probst said there was no timetable on when that might be. And how can we ever doubt again that the culture of so many of these Olympic sports helped Nassar hide his horror, that fear of retribution in the closed-off, insular, and subjective gymnastics world made it so incredibly hard for parents and athletes to effect change?

"But again, that investigation will be transparent, it will become public and whatever actions are required and appropriate based on that investigation will be taken by our Board".

"We don't now have any plans to bid for 2026 and we'll keep our options open for 2030", Probst said in South Korea.

Nassar, who also worked at Michigan State, had been the national medical coordinator for USA Gymnastics since 1996.

Former sports doctor Nassar last year pleaded guilty to molesting female athletes under the guise of medical treatment for almost 20 years and has been given two prison sentences in MI of 40 to 125 years and 40 to 175 years. He also apologized for the USOC's delay in being at the sentencing hearings. "We're doing that now", he said. "That was an error in judgement".

The Nassar scandal wasn't the only controversial topic during Friday's session.

Hours before the start of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, USOC chairman Larry Probst said there will be no personnel changes made by the board of directors until an investigation is completed into who knew what and when.

Larry Probst said the financial logistics of hosting the Winter Olympics two years before Los Angeles hosts the Summer Games in 2028 are too complex. Though the International Olympic Committee's normal process would give cities interested in 2030 about two more years of breathing room before they must commit, there's still the possibility that the IOC could consolidate 2026 and 2030 bidding, awarding those games concurrently.

"The exploratory committee will continue its dialogue with the USOC and IOC to determine relevant timelines and adjust accordingly", Robinson's statement says.
