Sen. Nelson: Outrage Over Florida Shootings Will be 'Turning Point'

The NRA invested $1 million in campaign ads for Rubio in 2016, although this pales in comparison with the $11.4 million the organization invested in President Donald Trump in 2016, The Atlas reported, prompting questions over the extent to which NRA-backed politicians will raise the issue of gun control following mass shootings.

During a Republican presidential primary debate in 2015, Rubio said new gun laws were "ineffective" and "infringe on the rights of law-abiding people and do nothing to keep guns out of the hands of unsafe people".

17 people were killed and 14 were injured when 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Wednesday. Bill Nelson (D-FL) says "enough is enough". It was meant to block those with serious mental health problems from buying guns and add them to the the national background check database.

However, he pointed out that a few years ago, lawmakers could not pass a bill specifying that a person on the terrorist watch list could not buy a gun, and "that's about as common sense as anything". "It's for killing", Nelson said during an appearance in Parkland Friday morning. It's a guy that's putting all these things up on social media.

"You see the result", he told reporters. "But you are going to struggle to keep it out of the hands of someone who has decided that's what they want to use because there are so many of them out there already that would be grandfathered in". "Just stop. Everyone knows what you're doing - it's time".

"Maybe this will be the turning point".

"I think it's important to know all of that before you jump to conclusions that there's some law we could have passed that could have prevented it", he continued. "Now, changing the law means that you've got to get the votes to get 60 votes. It's called a motion for cloture".

"And still no gun control?"

"You hear in the newspapers that they used a certain kind of gun and therefore, let's make it harder to get those kind of guns".
