Kodaira, who came into the race as the heavy favourite after winning three of four World Cup events in a stellar season past year that included breaking the world record, will be disappointed by her second-placed finish.

Nao Kodaira insists her silver medal-winning performance in the women's 1,000 meters on Wednesday night has put her in good stead for her next crack at a gold medal in her favored 500-meter sprint at the Pyeongchang Olympics.

World record holder Kodaira watched ter Mors set an Olympic-record 1 minute, 13.56 seconds in the 12th pairing and could not better it when she stepped onto the Gangneung Oval track, finishing 0.26 of a second off the Dutchwoman's time. "I recognise there were two better skaters there today".

Takagi, 23, finished with a time of 1:13.98. At the Olympics, always it's the stronger athlete that wins.

Dutch media described the win as a triumph for Ter Mors, who started the season with a knee injury and had to pull out of the World Cup with back trouble.

Wust, 31, went off in the fourth of the 16 pairs and set the early benchmark with her time of 1:15.32.

"It wasn't a bad time", said Kodaira. My skating was just not worthy of a gold medal. So yes, we're a little frustrated, however, for Japanese speedskating, I think this is a great step.

It is the first time in Olympic history 2 Japanese women medaled in the same event.

Takagi, who won the silver medal in the 1,500 meters on Monday, felt she had performed better than expected. "We still have room to improve and we can challenge them".

"I might have set the world record in the 1,000 meters but to be honest I still don't fully believe I am the finished product in this distance".

"In the 1,500m I was at full energy, but the energy is gone now", said compatriot Takagi, whose bronze was her second of PyeongChang 2018, after her silver behind Wust in the 1,500m.
