TURKEY: 6 journalists bag life sentences over failed coup attempt

In Turkey, a court in Istanbul has sentenced six journalists accused of involvement in a 2016 coup attempt to life prison terms.

Anadolu Agency said the court in Silivri, on the outskirts of Istanbul, convicted prominent journalists Ahmet Altan, Mehmet Altan and Nazli Ilicak and three other media sector employees of crimes against the state. One other defendant was acquitted.

Today's sentencing came on the same day that another Turkish court ordered the release of Deniz Yucel, a German-Turkish journalist, who spent just over a year in pre-trial detention without an indictment, in a case that tested relations between Ankara and Berlin. Gulen, however denies the accusation.

The lawyer for the Altan brothers said they would appeal against the verdict.

Ahmet Altan was charged after he said on a programme: "Whatever the developments were that lead to military coups in Turkey, by making the same decisions, Erdogan is paving the same path".

Since the failed coup attempt in July 2016, Turkey has arrested or sacked tens of thousands of people from state institutions with many accusing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government of using the failed coup as a pretext to silence opposition in the country and tighten its grip on power. Many proclaim their innocence.

Prosecutors deemed that their comments indicated they had prior knowledge of the coup attempt.

The constitutional court, Turkey's highest, had previously ruled for Mehmet Altan's release, saying that his detention amounted to the violation of his rights. "Today's verdict serves as incontrovertible evidence of the severe erosion of Turkey's democracy, demonstrates that the courts too have utterly abandoned their responsibility to uphold the rule of law and safeguard freedom of speech, and sets a awful precedent for the other trials to come".
