Wine may be good for oral health

However, the study also claims that it does not recommend drinking more red wine. Traditionally, some health benefits of polyphenols have been attributed to the fact that these compounds are antioxidants, meaning they likely protect the body from harm caused by free radicals.

In the past, polyphenols has been known to work with bacteria in the gut to boost health, however, this study is one of the first to assess the impact the various strands can have on teeth and gums.

The study measured the effects of polyphenols from red wine against the same chemicals from grape seed and red wine extract supplements, each pitted against "bad" bacteria that stick to teeth and gums, causing dental decay and gum disease.

They discovered that the wine polyphenols were generally better than the wine extracts at reducing the bacteria's ability to stick to the cells.

Apples are excellent sources of fibre that act as cleansing agent.

Although, people who are not the big fan of red wine or under the regulated age limit can also consume polyphenols through the drinks like black tea, green tea, coffee, lemon juice, orange and cider, and also some fruits such as raspberries, blueberries, black grapes, beans, kiwis and cherries.

Red wine is rich in polyphenols but they are also found in a range of other drinks and foods.

Lending further weight to that idea, these polyphenols performed even better when combined with Streptococcus dentisani, a bug that's thought to be an oral probiotic.

On the bright side, the study could lead to new dental treatments to protect your pearly whites in the future. As for how the polyphenols help, the researchers found that some of the benefits may be the result of metabolites that form as the polyphenols begin to be digested in the mouth.

However, the British Dental Association (BDA) warns that the acidic nature of wine can damage the enamel of your teeth.

Naveed Sattar, professor of metabolic medicine at the University of Glasgow, said the research was "interesting" but still "very preliminary".
