Winter Olympics: Anti-North Korea protesters burn flags before opening ceremony

Winter Olympics: Anti-North Korea protesters burn flags before opening ceremony

"The players can only control their own performance".

North Korea's display of warheads is anything but new, and the display of weapons via parade has been a constant way to show western countries such as the U.S, France, and U.K that North Korea is developing rapidly in terms of military power.

Earlier on Friday, Pence said Moon gave his backing to additional measures the United States is planning to try to curb North Korea's missile and nuclear programs, speaking after paying tribute at a South Korean memorial.

Washington has also threatened the North with a new batch of tough sanctions.

Protestors have also hit out at the President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, as the Winter Olympics has been used as a matter to begin talks between the North and South.

Pence says the US and South Korea are "completely aligned".

Seating plans shown on television had Pence seated directly opposite the North's Kim Yong Nam at the reception in Pyeongchang.

"He has never been considered a threat to the regime", said professor Yang Moo-jin of the University of North Korean Studies.

Moon's office said he told Abe that the talks between the Koreas would not disrupt worldwide efforts to deal with North Korea's nuclear program.

The two sides had marched together at the opening ceremony at three prior Games, starting in 2000 at Sydney.

Moon said improved relations between the Koreas may be a step toward resolving the nuclear standoff.

It remains to be seen whether North and South Korea can actually live together. "We've just been preparing so much for this", Murray said.

Nearly all the dog meat restaurants in South Korea's Pyeongchang county, where the Winter Olympics opening ceremony will be held starting today, have defied a government request to stop serving the food, an official admitted Thursday.

But he pointed out that whenever the North's state media reel off the names of officials who attend ceremonies, "Kim Yong Nam's name always comes next after that of Kim Jong Un".

White House spokesman Raj Shah confirmed Thursday that no meetings between Vice President Mike Pence or the president's daughter, Ivanka Trump, have been planned.

Speed skater Nao Kodaira, who serves as Japan's team captain for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, will not attend the opening ceremony on Friday, her coach Masahiro Yuki said. Yo-jong will arrive in South Korea Friday, accompanied by numerous officials.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has dispatched a delegation of more that 500, including his increasingly influential sister Kim Yo Jong.

The last member of the Kim family to set foot in Seoul was Yo-jong's grandfather Kim Il-sung, the North's founder, after his forces invaded in 1950 and the capital fell.
