A Company Is Building 3D-Printed Homes For Just $10000

Using an industrial sized Vulcan printer, ICON says it can now build their single-story home for $10,000 but is working to drop that cost to just $4,000. ICON is focused on creating homes in parts of the world that don't have the economic wherewithal to house the poverty-stricken. So this week at the annual film and innovation festival known as SXSW, an Austin-based startup unveiled the solution to the growing problem of affordable housing around the world.

Now that the proof of concept has been finished, ICON and New Story will be moving into phase two by taking the idea to El Salvador and printing its first homes there. On the outside, the 3D-printed house looks like common buildings there're a unique covered patio and spacious windows. One of its founders, Jason Ballard, will be testing out the home by living in it.

According to New Story, the construction process produces no waste and the homes themselves are able to withstand harsh climates and other constraints such as limited water, power and labour.

"ICON believes, as do I, that 3D printing is going to be a method for all kinds of housing", New Story co-founder Alexandria Lafci added. The company also plans to build homes in the United States eventually.

ICON's main aim is not to just build homes fast, but make them extremely affordable as well. However, by working alongside ICON, they now have access to the impressive Vulcan 3D printer. "It's one of the more promising potential habitat technologies".

Despite the fact that the hardware utilized as a part of 3D-printing is very exorbitant, notwithstanding, the materials can be cheap.

In the meantime, if you'd like to join the effort to eliminate homelessness on Planet Earth, you can donate to the cause on the New Story website.
